Stand-Up Paddling
Just an hour from Porto begins the Douro’s magically scenic wine region. From its origins in Spain to its mouth at the Atlantic, the Douro winds for several hundred kilometers through northern Portugal, carving its way past steep vineyard slopes.
On our Douro Stand-Up Paddling (SUP) tour, you’ll discover this fascinating region along the river—and Porto’s lush hinterland—in a truly unique way. Gliding across the water on a SUP board, you can enjoy nature from an entirely new perspective.
Getting there
The SUP tour starts in the center of Porto and continues at our surf school in Bonfim. From there, we drive in our SUP van to a picturesque little village upstream, where a tributary of the Douro meets the main river and terraced vineyards stretch all the way down to the water’s edge.
Shortly after leaving the city of Porto, the road leads us along the Douro through Porto’s charming hinterland. Rolling hills, green vineyards, and traditional villages with Mediterranean-style gardens shape the scenery here. After about an hour, we reach our destination.
Vineyards and clear rivers
At a quiet spot below the Douro’s vineyards, we launch our paddleboards into the water. It’s the perfect place to get comfortable on the board and warm up with a few simple exercises, guided by our experienced and local guide, to prepare for the tour.
Once everyone is familiar with their boards and basic paddling techniques, the route leads from the main river into a small, clear tributary. As you paddle upstream, the river narrows and winds along towering rock formations rising from the riverbed.
Small coves and natural waterfalls will frequently cross your path, inviting you to relax. Enjoy the tranquility of nature, or add a little adventure—jump from rocks or paddle through gentle rapids. There’s something here for everyone.
The SUP tour ends at Ilha dos Amores—the Island of Lovers—a small, secluded river island in the Douro. Here you can take a short break and enjoy the stunning views of the Douro before returning to Porto.

SUP is really easy to learn. All you need to do is stand on the board and move forward using your paddle. There you are – you are a stand up paddle boarder!

An SUP tour with us is a lightly active excursion, offering both relaxation and recreation. No one will feel stretched beyond their limit and everyone will find a tempo that’s right for them.
FOR ALL AGES
No prior experience is required and your age doesn’t matter. Everyone can take part!
